Strawberry Scented Burnout – ten years later
With my new Amazon Author page up and the second volume of SSB now readable on Kindle-supported devices, it’s high time that I take a look back on SSB, where we’ve been, and where the hell we’re going.
Back in 2008 I really had no idea that I’d be doing SSB this long. You already know the drill, revenge comic, blah blah blah, but if anything, the journey since then has been just as intense.
- The first artist just never really finished the art.
- The second artist got really mad when I said that I was gonna get a haircut. He subsequently quit.
- The third artist tried to take over the group behind my back and was thwarted when Neggy told me what he was trying to do. Plus his approach of “marketing” the comic by ambushing publishers after panels was beyond embarrassing.
- The third and fourth artists also tried to pick up girls at a dirt convention by namedropping SSB. The fourth artist then threw a tantrum demanding to know why “girls didn’t like him despite him being a nice guy”.
- The fourth artist then used a shower curtain as a blanket during Anime Conji 2013. He also tried to pick up on a girl by inviting her to the con suite where they “were gonna get tacos”.
- Now…..I’ve found a group of artists that are chill as fuck and receptive to whatever comes outta my head.
SSB itself went through numerous changes too. I started this out just as a comic. The production team was named “Team Mixed Nuts”. My homegirl Sapphire even drew us a sick-ass logo. After Mochi built a website, I decided to make a blog for the comic as well. At that time I was hoping to add some development anecdotes and shit, but that never happened. We even joined up with another group of like-minded comic people in the hopes of getting our own anthology off the ground, but all we did was eat pizza and talk shit all day.
Sometime in 2011, Justin suggested that we end Team Mixed Nuts and just become SSB wholly. Best move ever. I mean, it just flows together. We then added Brian and Mario, Ericka revamped our website, a zine was launched, and here we are.
What’s SSB’s mission statement? Haven’t really thought of it. However, after ten years of doing this, I can safely lay down some core values:
- We’re doing this shit for fun. If it’s not fun, then fuck it. Not literally, but, you know what I mean.
- We’re not doing this to please any execs, sponsors, or anyone in particular.
- As long as you’re doing to jam with us and keep a cool vibe going, we won’t turn anyone away.
- We just want to bring awareness to San Diego’s geeky and vibrant life. The forms don’t matter.
10 years of SSB madness down. A youtube channel, instagram page, and twitter. Who knows what lies in store? I’m hyped as fuck. To the current members of SSB, thank you so much for putting up with my whimsical and sometimes fleeting bullshit. It means a lot. To the past members of SSB who I don’t talk to anymore, know that I appreciate the work you did for me when we were working together. May your future endeavors not suck.
