For any film makers, writers, actors, or musicians out there, the Japanese American Natural Museum in Los Angeles is calling for original monologues or short performance pieces “that rethink, subvert, deconstruct, or satirize the eight Asian pop-culture archetypes depicted in the Marvels & Monsters: Unmasking Asian Images in U.S. Comics, 1942-1986 exhibition. Winning entries to be showcased on October 10, 2013.

The eight Asian pop-culture archetypes in this exhibition are: the Alien, the Brain, the Brute, the Guru, the Kamikaze, the Lotus Blossom, the Temptress, and the Manipulator. Entries must be a type of work or genre that can be performed live in under five minutes. Those whose entries are chosen will have the opportunity to perform their works on stage, and must be responsible for casting, staging, and directing their own works. According to the rules: “Entries must be received by no later than 5PM PT on September 15, 2013 to be considered. Winners will be notified by 5PM PT on September 18.” Click here for more information.

Not only does this showcase seem pretty cool, but the exhibition is definitely something I would love to check out. There will be life-size cutouts of the eight archetypes that I would enjoy taking pictures with. I am also curious about an intriguing installation called “Shades of Yellow” which “matches the shades used for Asian skin tones in the comics with their garish yellow Pantone™.”
