Get Up!

It’s morning and the mattress and pillows seem to literally be exerting a physical force on your body. There is an unexplainable pull reaching out from the soft surface of your bed and forcing you to stay in bed and ignore the issues of the day. This morning featured an especially strong pull, I’m still struggling to get myself ready for work, so I’ve decided to throw the above track on here not only for all of you but for myself also. J Cole makes quite the funky head nodding assortment of good music and I find this track to be of the perfect variety to make me hop out of bed and start head nodding around the room like I was too cool to actually dance at a club. Time to make moves folks.

Dom’s Still Callin.

Dom Kennedy serves up some visuals to accompany the release of “Get Home Safely”. “Still Callin″ to me was the stand out track from this particular tape, so it’s only proper that it gets the full video treatment. I’ve said it many times before in my writing and I will continue to make sure that it is said. Dom Kennedy has next where the West Coast is concerned. Kennedy has one of the most layed back, graceful voices to lace a rap track in years and whether or not he stuns you with his lyrics you will no doubt leave a listening session with at least four phrases to raise your ego in the face of any situation. Dom is the kind of rapper who effortlessly laces beats in a manner that makes listening to his tape an absolute pleasure. If these record label folks don’t see it, then they continue to prove again and again that they’re blind and out of touch with the industry. Never mind a rushed and oblivious XXL review, Kennedy spits raps that seem to come as natural as Cali kids wearing flip-flop’s and socks. Not to mention the fact that Kennedy seems determined to make sure the only thing that leaves his camp are quality, completed projects. You don’t see random leaks and throw away tracks on off days. If there’s a method to this industry madness, they have the recipe.

The video is a continuation of Kennedy’s laid back approach. Simple but dramatic, the video is an entrance to a larger national stage, a statement of purpose. Hard work be payin’ off but only if you can manage to just be cool along the way.

“Nice Guys”

This may not seem like a big deal to all of you in the blogosphere but, I personally can’t stand when I see “Nice Guy” status updates or tweets. I’m sure you’ve seen them…you haven’t!? allow me to show you some examples.

“In the movies, the good guy gets the girl. In real life, it’s usually the prick”

“I’m a great catch, why can’t I find a girlfriend?”

“All the girls I talk to keep asking “where have all the good guys gone?”. I’m in the FRIEND ZONE, where you left me.”

So guys pull this b!tcha$$ sh!t for a couple of reasons. Hopes that a particular crush ‘likes or responds’ to the status update, alerting any and all females that he’s single and is a “genuine” good guy, Thinks the girls who respond “want the D”. Guys most likely have some kind of ulterior motive OR they truly believe in the stuff they’re saying. Which in my book, is the worst.

4OVPAcomic from Alligator Sunglasses (link here)

The problem with the nice guy mentality is that they think every guy who isn’t them is a “jerk”. They seem to blame there inability to get into a relationship on everybody BUT themselves, What “nice guys” fail to realize is that maybe they’re not getting any love because they’re insecure, passive aggressive, whiny, clingy, submissive, and boring. Nice guys constantly blame their failures on women having bad taste in men, and fail to even think for a moment that maybe they’re issue is that they have HORRIBLE taste in women and are bad at gauging whether or not a women is interested. Now I’m not telling you to go out in the world and act like a dickhead to women. Just grow a pair, stop being thirsty, and have the confidence to be yourself. and if your saying “it’s not that easy” well NO DUH! what in life is?

now listen to this Player Hater Anthem from the ultimate “nice guy” Drake…

that’s my sh!t.

So sometimes you get this one song, right? Suggestion from a friend, random download from a playlist, picking up an unknown album from a record store, whatever the means of possession might happen to be, this certain songs comes into your life. In today’s current age you drag the little file over to iTunes waiting to see what this mysterious little MP3 file holds for you. The file loads and through the speakers out blasts some glorious cacophony the likes of which you have never heard.

It’s hard to describe but sometimes certain songs hit you on particular days and they literally just change your life for that day. Music really has an incredible power to change the way a person thinks, feels and acts. It can call an entire group of people to action or unite complete strangers. More importantly for you and I, it can take us to a completely different place as we sit in front of a 15 inch computer screen.

If you could see the way the track below makes me get up and walk around my room nodding my head, than you might have a little better understanding of the feeling I am trying to convey. The track is so amazingly soft but at the same time it pounds so hard on a profoundly deeper level. It’s like being smacked with with the finest pillow by the grade school girl on whom you always had a severe crush. Sure you feel it, and sure you are getting hit, but you wouldn’t mind feeling it again and again.

It may not work for you with the below song, the weather may not be right from where ever you are reading, you may not be a fan of the lyrics, hell you may not even like the song. But when you find that perfect song for yourself you will know exactly what I am talking about as you get up out of your chair and begin to nod your head around your room despite the confused stares of those around. That’s what happens to me at least.

SSB vs. Valvrave:The Liberator

It’s been about 11 years or so since Gundam Seed first hit us with its “space drama giant robots destroying colonies” schtick, and Sunrise decided that we were lacking in that department, so they sent us Valvrave.  They realized early on that teenagers go with giant robots, just like Evangelion (we all know how well that turned out, right).

No, not that.

No, not that.

My first impressions after watching the first 4 episodes?

They threw Gundam Seed (NOT DESTINY), Code Geass, Vampires, Metal Gear Solid 4’s nanomachines, and TM Revolution into a blender, and this is the result.  A visual feast of stuff blowing up, teenagers making peace signs, and EL ERUFU.  I’m impressed by it.  Maybe it’s the fact that I’m older now, but I’m finding it harder and harder to get an anime to gel with me if it’s not Initial D.  I blame TM Revolution.

SSB’s “TM Revolution Rule of Cool” – If TM Revolution is involved with an Anime/Manga/Game franchise of any sort, it’s automatically cool, or at least tolerable.

So yes, I will be following Valvrave: The Liberator.

An Upscale Casual Kinda Night

‘Twas another wonderful Wednesday night at The Office Bar in North Park, San Diego. Upscale Casual, my favorite San Diego ukulele band, brought with them the “sweet sounds of the islands to the mainland” once again. On this particular night, only three members of the band graced us with their island presence, but the band actually consists of four members: Jason Torres (not pictured), Vanessa Nguyen (middle), Frederick Callo (right), and Sean Davis (left).

Upscale-Casual-April-2013-SmilingUpscale-Casual-April-2013-Goofy

As an avid fan of this sweet group, I’ve been loyally following them all around San Diego. I always make it a point to attend one of their shows any chance I get, in order to satiate my desires to hear the addictively serenading sounds of the ukulele. Their music not only comforts their audiences, but their stage presence also engages their audiences to feel the music with them. As they play a broad range of cover songs from Anuhea’s “Simple Love Song” to J-Boog‘s “Sunshine Girl” to Nicki Minaj‘s “Starships,” they imprint a unique island twist to each song that coincides with Upscale Casual’s unique style.

Their rendition of the childhood classic Ducktales theme song manages to provide a sense of nostalgia that warms the hearts of their audiences. Upscale Casual’s style is not only relaxing but playful, attracting all music lovers back for more with each show.

In addition to cover songs, they also showcase a few original songs such as “Good Times” or mashups of “As Long As You Love Me” (Bieber/Backstreet Boys). I love the 34 second mark of “Good Times” because I absolutely love carne asada fries and Korean BBQ, and I’m sure a bunch of you men will be amused at the 1:38 second mark. =)

Upscale Casual has been swaying their way around the mainland with their serenading ukuleles since July 2011, and with each performance I look forward to what comes next for this band. For more information on Upscale Casual, visit them on their Facebook page, their main site, their Twitter page, or their YouTube Channel.

Listen to them, like them, love them. And come join me at their next show!! Mahalo!! =P

I <3 SCANDAL

Yep, I'm hooked.

Yep, I’m hooked.

I’m a huge fan of K-On.  So naturally, I started gravitating back to J-pop once I really started getting into the series.  Along the way I heard about this group called SCANDAL.  Apparently, they got together in high school and started jamming out.  Then they started playing in clubs, and they…quite simply blew up.  You might’ve heard their songs in Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

The group’s lineup consists for 4 girls, each with their own distinct roles.

Haruna Ono (小野春菜 Ono Haruna?) – lead vocals, secondary guitarist (she’s the face of the group and she has a cute overbite)

  • Born: August, 1988
  • Hometown: AichiJapan
  • Guitar: Fender Tele Thinline Deluxe Black

Mami Sasazaki (笹崎まみ Sasazaki Mami?) – lead guitarist, secondary vocals (OMG HER VOICE IS SO KAWAII AND CUTE AND I JUST WANT TO HUG HER)

  • Born: May, 1990
  • Hometown: HyōgoJapan
  • Guitar: Gretch White Falcon Double Cutaway G6136DC

Tomomi Ogawa (小川ともみ Ogawa Tomomi?) – bassist, secondary vocals (She plays bass, so she doesn’t really stand out as much, but she’s necessary.)

  • Born: May, 1990
  • Hometown: HyōgoJapan
  • Bass: Fender American Standard Precision Bass Silver

Rina Suzuki (鈴木理菜 Suzuki Rina?) – drummer, secondary vocals (GOOD GOD YOU ARE HOT WHY DON’T THEY FOCUS ON YOU MORE RINAAAAA)

  • Born: August, 1991
  • Hometown: NaraJapan
  • Drums: Pearl Masters Series PREMIUM MAPLE

I mentioned the K-On connection earlier in this entry.  Imagine my surprise when I came across this on youtube.

SCANDAL AND SHOKO NAKAGAWA ARE SINGING “DON’T SAY LAZY”.  YES.

Anyway, give this group a listen.  You won’t regret it.

Earl Sweatshirt. Whoaaaaaaaaa

I forgot how much I really use to ENJOY writing about music on this here blog or any of my solo blogs.  People hit me on Twitter every once and a while and remind me about the old playlists that I use to have running on my blogs.  If you were around for those times, then you remember when Mike Posner was a nobody but we still had him jamming along on the side bar of my blog. Pac Div, Dom, Bambu, Miguel, XV and all sorts of goodness quietly carrying on while I talked nonsense.

odd-future
All I’ve been listening to lately is the Odd Future shit. Hence their inclusion in this post.  The dude’s from OFWGKTA are on a roll, The emergence of MellowHype (Hodgy&Left Brain), Domo Genesis, and most notably Earl Sweatshirt are the reasons I’m just going to come out and say that AS OF RIGHT NOW…they reign supreme.

No, not some dream you get after you huff too much paint, it’s the visuals for Earl Sweatshirt’s new video, ”WHOA”.  A follow up to late 2012’s “Chum”, “WHOA” serves as the second single off his highly anticipated album, Doris. The Odd Future crew has both toned down the transgression from their earlier tapes while distilling and concentrating all the aspects that made those tapes unique. Unlike “Chum” or other new Odd Future tracks, “WHOA” is a direct throwback to that earlier sound. Thankfully, Earl has traded in the gratuitous references to rape and murder for a few carefully placed lines about drug use and masturbation, which makes them all the more grotesque and intriguing.

Part of the appeal is the juxtaposition of these lines with Earl’s laconic apathy in the video – the dude is floating on filthy water in the middle of a reservoir tank.  Casual…no big deal right?  Regardless of what you think about Earl and Odd Future, whether the video is just weird for the sake of being weird, no one can ignore the hotness of a line like “Get ‘em higher than the pitch of metal tea kettle songs”.
Doris doesn’t have a release date yet, but if “WHOA” is any indication, it’ll be worth the wait.
