aka DAN Adoption Documentary pt. 8

We return to bring you the final chapter of this amazing documentary. Dan Matthews performs for the first time in Korea with his brother and sister in attendance and says goodbye to his family at Incheon Airport. Watch here:

The vignette highlighting the impact of being a Korean adoptee speaks volumes about how this unique experience will affect future generations. Likely, they will experience present, local culture but some cultural values may be lost. It’s similar to my own experience as the child of immigrants. We’ll just have to wait and see what the impact will be.

Saying goodbye is never easy. I couldn’t help getting emotional seeing him with his biological mother. Her emotions literally jump from the screen every time I watch it. Be glad to know since then, Dan returns to spend time with his family in Korea. My hope for him is that this experience continues to shape him and his world view.

I hope you enjoyed us bringing you this series. I feel that we all relate to Dan’s journey. Knowing and accepting who you are is the first step to accomplishing big things. How did you guys enjoy it? Want to see more stuff like it? Tweet me at @999HP!

The Dan Matthews’ saga continues with a couple of crucial chapters of self-discovery. In episode 6, we follow Dan to Geoje Island, the place he was born. He tours the island with his family and has a glimpse of what his life could have been.  Here’s the episode:

In episode 7, Dan gets the DNA test results back to confirm the relationship with his family. Dan prepares for the biggest concert of his life as the International Korean Adoption Association Summit winds down. Dan also receives touching words of encouragement from important people in his life. Watch the episode:

I had a similar experience in the towns my mother and father were born. Traveling through the Philippines and learning about how my parents grew up was eye-opening. They had to travel far to go to school and lived very modestly. Just as Dan might have, I greatly appreciate how well I live in America. Have any of you had a similar experience? What was it like? Dan Matthew’s takes a trip around Seoul with Megan Lee and Simon/Martina of EatYourKimchi. They hang out, catch up and give him advice on what’s happened to him thus far with his biological family. Here’s the episode:

Seoul is an amazing city! Friends of mine who’ve come back say it’s a pretty cool place. I don’t really track Korean stuff as closely as I do Japanese stuff though. It’s definitely on my travel list! The gift giving though… great idea! I wish people gave me gifts every visit! Definitely a custom I could get used to! Living in America helps you to appreciate when you’re able to visit your home country. Looking forward to the next akaDAN episode on the ISAtv channel!

aka DAN Adoption Documentary pt. 4

Part 4 is the one that tugs at my heartstrings the most. We get an inside look into Dan Matthew’s adoption experience as a baby and meet his foster mother Mrs. Lee for the first time since leaving Korea. Seeing the babies at the adoption center makes me grateful for parents who take the time to lovingly raise their kids. Without giving too much away, you can see Dan’s life was changed forever. Here’s the episode:

I completely relate to how Dan feels meeting his foster mother. I had a similar moment coming home to the Philippines and seeing relatives I don’t remember as a small child. It is difficult to reciprocate the love someone has for you with little to no memories of it. I am definitely grateful for that love and care and showed it to them throughout my stay.

Show love to the people around you because they do the same. Remember you are where you are because of them. You owe it to them to be great and lift others up. More with Dan when part 5 hits the ISAtv channel! Tweet me with your thoughts about this video at @999HP!

We continue to define and re-define our identity. One of my good friends Dan Matthews stars in a series documenting his journey to find his biological Korean family. Dan is a Korean-American adoptee and ever since I’ve known him, he’s tried to reconnect with his Korean heritage. He’s brought so many people together through his community work and performing solo and with his band, afterschoolspecial.

akaDAN

I want to share his series to outline that continuous self-discovery is important. Very seldom do we see such material from Asian-Americans and Dan continues to create music and projects for our generation. In the spirit of identity, I hope it inspires you to connect with what you love and what defines you. Whether it’s the arts, hobbies or passions, we all have something that keeps us motivated to be our best and help us fully express ourselves.

In episode 1, Dan makes a surprising discovery and prepares for his trip to attend the International Korean Adoptee Association (IKAA) conference in Korea. From here, take note that every journey begins differently and sometimes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

Episode 2:

More of this series when episode 3 releases. Look for more updates from us about the series and more about self-discovery to pursue what it is you love. I know we blog about geeky things but I also feel that If you’re not geeking out about something, you’re not living.
