#N2B

So…yeah, this one took a little longer than expected, but it turned out great.  This one was written by yours truly and drawn out by shida214 over on fiverr.

Yes, this is truly how SSB gets down before a con.

San Diego Comic Con 2016

One of my Muay Thai teammates told me that he appreciates my outlandish geeky personality and the fact that I don’t hide my trash fandoms.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, I promise.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, I promise.

There’s a reason why I am the way I am now, and Comic Con is the main reason for it.

It was a little over 8 years ago, when I was in a long-term relationship with a girl I knew since we were little.  Slowly, as time went on, she took more and more measures to keep me away from my family and friends, and she tried to keep me away from anime and manga.  She wanted me to become the ideal boyfriend for her that was into One Tree Hill, hip hop anonymous dancing, and eventually, her flesh vibrator for her own personal use.

yukako

She was totally Yukako Yamagishi.

Still, it takes two to tango.  I can’t blame her for everything that happened.  It was my fault for letting things get that far.

Things came to a head in July of 2008, when she wanted me to forgo Comic Con for that year to go to her cousin’s 21st birthday in Vegas.  I’m sorry, but if you’re a San Diegan and you schedule anything during Comic Con weekend then you seriously need your head checked.  I held out, naturally.  By this point, I had had enough of turning myself into someone that I wasn’t.

I eventually got dumped, and I went through a really sad time.

It wasn’t long after that that my homegirl Jenny told me to pick myself up and turn this into a positive, and here we are.  I started a manga that was basically a self-insert fanfiction that was part Gurren Lagann, part Metal Gear Solid, and all types of ill shit.  (Too bad that manga’s script was on my old laptop, that no longer turns on).  I put that on a website, and became comic-con professionally approved, as my comic was published!

I’ve really gotta find that manga, somehow.  Maybe get it redrawn.

Within those 8 years, I made some new friends, discovered Muay Thai, joined an anime convention, ran a half-marathon, and discovered the fact that nothing comes with holding yourself back.  For better or worse.  So yeah, that’s why when I’m not training my butt off at the gym, I’ll be out there catchin’ them Pokémon.

Osaka was lit, fam

Strawberry Scented Burnout grew as well.  Not just a manga (though we need to get back on that, seriously) anymore, today our website comprises of my little brother Ferris, homeboy Justin, my little sister Ericka as our webmaster, Brian our videographer, Jairus on games, Joshua as our aidoru hell gatekeeper, Mario as our graphic designer, and you readers, reading this crazy website.

Comic Con weekend always gets me nostalgic from where we began, and I can’t help but wonder what lies in store for us next.  I should really look at the panel schedule and see what’s good.  That being said, if you run into me, I won’t ignore you or anything!  Say hi!

So….how does this work again?

Romeo, that water was cold.

How’s everyone doing?  Between comic con, working with new writers, a promotion at my work, a knee injury, and my new addiction to Manna BBQ, we’ve been busy.  Let me apologize for the lack of updates on SSB, believe me, we’ve all wanted to sit down and write, but we’ve been planning some new things, on top of all the stuff I mentioned earlier.

A new artist

We’ve been working with Jimmy Pham, an artist that doesn’t have his head jammed up his own ass.   He’s got a style that’s quite malleable, and doesn’t make people change their script to fit his art, especially after it’s been drawn.  He’s not socially awkward, not a tool, and he’s pretty swoll.  Seriously.  Swolltaku no michi, for sure.

Videos

Brian, Justin, and myself have been kicking around the idea of videos.  Why the hell not?  I’m always down for something new.  One of our new videos is at the top of the page.

Collaborations

We’ll probably be working with a lot more people to bring more lulz and creativity to your computer screen.  Because reasons.

More of the same, pokey geekery that you know and love

While we are gonna be dropping some new shit, we’re not forgetting what makes SSB…SSB.  A love for all things truly geek.  Anime reviews, Game reviews, MMA stuff, me explaining my love for Ar Tonelico to the Dirty Gentlemen, Justin combing his sweet-ass pompadour, Ericka repurposing the internet for her own purposes, Brian getting us into shenanigans, Jared putting people back together, Abe talkin’ about soccer, Jonathan talkin’ about wrassling….IT’S GONNA BE FUCKIN’ TIGHT.

So buckle up, because we’re gonna bring the noise.  And here’s a preview of what you can expect over the coming weeks.

#otakuFIGHTER No. 2 – Training for a Joe Higashi cosplay.

otakuFIGHTER_093

Currently, I’m trying to burn off the fat and build some muscle for next year’s comic con.  I’m gonna be cosplaying as Joe Higashi from the Fatal Fury/KOF series.  Just in case you needed a quick reminder:

And since this requires me to be shirtless, I’ve gotta do this right.  I’ve already increased the intensity of my training sessions at The Boxing Club.  I train for 4 days a week, and this is how it usually goes down:

My training sessions at The Boxing Club usually come in 3 parts.

Part 1. Muay Thai – As I’m training in the art of Muay Thai, class becomes really important.  My coaches and training partners all help to improve our technique, speed, and strength.  The conditioning drills and workouts are very intense and challenging.  Sparring…is a whole other beast.

Part 2: Running – Coach Caine (featured in the previous entry) makes me run an additional 30 minutes after EVERY CLASS I take.  The run is done at a medium-to-high pace, and serves as my stamina/cardio training.  This is the hardest part of my training sessions, and it usually leaves me pretty winded.

Part 3: Weights.  I use the various exercise machines to build muscle strength.  Depending on the day, I work on different muscle groups.

I aim to take at least 3-4 weekday trips to the gym.  My Saturday workouts are different.

Part 1: Spin.  My spin coach is a beast.  Taking a spin class should not be taken lightly.

Part 2: Power Kickboxing/Bagwork.  The Boxing Club’s power kickboxing classes are a fun combination of aerobic exercise and striking technique.  I use this class as a means to fine-tune my striking combinations and distance judging abilities.

Part 3: Weights.  Again.

Diet?  I’ll cover that in the next entry.  For now, enjoy this video of Joe beating Shin Akuma in CVS2.

COMIC-CON countdown: Get your head right.

..That’s NOT what I meant..but I support you all the way if it falls into your lap. >_<

Since Comic-Con is a week away, I thought I’d help you step your Comic-Con Cosplay game up a notch. If you’re tired of wearing heavy, itchy wigs..or wanna show you are KING/QUEEN cosplayer of ALL cosplayers..I’ve got your back. Whether it’s just for the weekend or longer, you won’t regret this most awesome decision to have fun with this. I’m hooked.

For the past 8 months, I’ve been on this crazy neon hair journey. The past week I definitely stepped it up. I went from bleaching the bottom 2/3 of my hair and coloring it to going all out and finally bleaching EVERYTHING. This post will give you a starting point if this is something you ever consider doing..whether you decide to do it today or 10 months from now. Stop reading now if you have no intention of doing this..but if you’re interested, a lengthy post shall follow. The Evolution:

MOST important things people won’t tell you:

  • COCONUT OIL: This will protect your hair in so many ways. Put 2-3TBS it in a plastic bowl and brush it onto your hair hours prior to bleaching. Leave it on when you apply the bleach.
  • ORANGE HAIR is only good for Red and Bright Pink Hair Colors. Everything else: BLONDE. Trust me. I dyed purple over orange and ended up with…BROWN hair…
  • MIX SOME WHITE CONDITIONER into your dye to make it stretch farther or lighten the color a bit. Get more for your money and condition your bleached hair all at once.

So, you’re ready for this journey? Now, where to start? What Brands? Help?!

Let me tell you, I’ve spent way too much money learning this on my own..so..just TRUST ME here, okay. Go walk your little self to Sally Beauty Supply or go order this stuff online. DO NOT think you’re going to find your blonde hair in a box. Unless you’re already a fortunate one with lighter hair. If you have dark hair, just skip it all together. If you try to do this from a box, you’ll need at least 3 or 4 boxes of Feria Extreme Platinum to get anywhere close..and that’s already 4 times more than you need to spend.

Step 1: Get some Loreal Quick Blue Bleach Powder! BEST I have tried. It’s about $5 for one packet or $15 for a bucket. You’ll need 2 packets if you’re doing your entire head and have long hair. An Alternative is getting a blonde hi-lift box dye and adding some bleach powder to it to intensify lift.

Step 2: Bottle of 30 Vol Peroxide Developer. Get the cream version. Nothing higher than 30 volume..your hair is already getting mistreated enough w/ the bleach. It’s about $4.

Step 3: Toning color, like Wella Color Charm Toner..or a cheap, boxed blonde dye to get the brass out. Or you can use some Purple shampoo to gradually tone it down!

Step 4: Pick your poison. This is probably the most irritating part of the journey. “What brand of color do I get..?!” Save yourself the trouble and please just DON’T buy the Beyond the Zone brand stuff..seriously. Stop. Right. Now.

  • TEAL/TURQUOISE: For that BRIGHT Hatsune Miku teal, use NRage Twisted TealManic Panic Atomic Turquoise falls closer to the greenish side.
  • NEON PINK: for the BRIGHTEST of BRIGHT, HIGHLIGHTER PINK-bright hair..Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink. For a less intense bright pink, ION BRIGHTS in Magenta is awesome.
  • FUCHSIA & PURPLES: the ION BRIGHTS in Fuchsia is pretty close to pink with a hint of purple. ION BRIGHTS in Purple is a fairly darker purple than other brands. Mix Hot Hot Pink and some Atomic Turquoise for a bright purple! That’s usually what I do.

NRage Demi-Permanent dyes last quite a while. Seriously. Taking all the teal out of my hair was a daunting task. Usually turquoise colors like the Manic Panic brand come out so easily (too easily) within a couple weeks. I did everything in the world to try to strip it from my hair and it just wouldn’t go. Took bleaching it to finally do this. So..that’s hot strong this color is.

Manic Panic: Best consistency overall and widest variety of colors if you don’t intend on mixing any colors yourself…but fades faster than any other color.

Ion Brights: Awesome color if you know how to manipulate the formula correctly. Straight from the tube, it seriously has the consistency of dried out acrylic paint. To solve this and get the most out of these colors, squeeze them out into a plastic container and add small amounts of conditioner into it and mix it with a small spoon until it get’s smooth. After that, it’s AMAZING to work with.

Once you bleached and have decided, work it into your hair however you want and leave it for a few hours or even overnight. Cover it with plastic or a plastic bag so it doesn’t dry out and apply some heat if you’d like. Wash it out w/ cold water, and don’t expect it to run completely clear. Dry your hair right away. I’d advise a designated “Color Towel” for your hair because it’s going to run every time you wash your hair. If you want to use warm water, wash it as fast you can, rinse the shampoo out, run it quickly under cold water then apply conditioner to stop the color from running further.

With SSB’s own at his 26th Birthday Bash in LA with my BRIGHT HAIR!

I wish you all the best of luck on your journey. Get creative. I used different gradients to have fun with. But most importantly, have fun. I love my hair–whether or not anyone else feels the same doesn’t matter to me at all.
