I consider myself to be a Mixed Martial Artist. Now, I’m not as big, cut, or as juiced up as someone like “Rampage” Jackson, “Bones” Jones, or even Wanderlei Silva. But I do have the passion for the martial arts.
Ever since I was 15, I’ve been involved in the martial arts in some way, shape, or form. I started off with classic olympic-style Taekwondo, eventually getting my black belt. I guess it was there that I gained a knack for striking, and it remains my forte to this day. In college, it was Judo and Wing Chun Kung-Fu. I gained some ground and takedown techniques, plus I picked up some striking concepts. Last, I wound up learning Boxing and Muay Thai. Those two are definitely the most demanding and brutal out of all the martial arts I’ve taken. They demand rigorous training and conditioning, and your utmost respect. The second you don’t respect either art, you wind up on the canvas not knowing where the fuck you are.
What does this have to do with the upcoming relaunch of “Strawberry Scented Burnout”? A lot, actually. The manga will draw a lot from my martial art experiences, and I plan on keeping things as accurate as I can…well, to a point anyway. (It is a manga, after all).
First off, a quick shoutout to my homies at rhythmemotion.net. The superfriends of the Internet.
Just about everyone I know has come into contact with a good old classic pair of Vans at least once in their life, the vast majority of these people probably a good deal more than one pair. The classic thick rubber soles, thin canvas body and endless array of colors have combined to create a classic silhoutte that has graced the feed of everyone from the Z-Boys of California to Sean Penn as “Spicloi” in Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
Sneaker Freaker an amazing interview with Jason Le of Vans that details the history of the company. What stated out as a small manufacturing company pushing out simple shoes has grown into an international sensation that has evolved from merely being a shoe company, to a veritable staple in the industry. Vans quite simply are essential streetwear. Click here to read the interview, definitely well done.
I’m on a dance punk kick since last night – let me have this! You see, I felt my post on !!! did not do the genre justice. Even though !!! is one of the recommended bands to listen to when it comes to this genre, they aren’t my favorite. I’ve always preferred Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Does It Offend You Yeah?, Death From Above 1979, and Klaxons. I either go hard w/the dance punk or sway more electronic and nu disco. !!! is too much of the earlier sound, which isn’t bad, I just felt like every band sounded like them in early 2000s (i.e. Hot Hot Heat).
For an example of something a little “harder” that I do like, and in keeping faith to you nerd heads, I have included this video from Hadouken! If you don’t get that reference, then obviously you’re not a real nerd.
Let’s talk music (because apparently that’s what I am supposed to talk about). I just got back home from seeing !!! tonight (also spelled/pronounced Chk Chk Chk). I was pretty bummed that I didn’t get to go to Disneyland today, so seeing !!! was a nice treat. I had totally forgotten about the show until a friend sent me a text saying I was on guest list. I thought, “AWESOME!”, not because I was on guest list, but because I wasn’t entirely sure if I wanted to pay full price for a band I only had luke warm feelings for.
For me, going to shows is like listening to music online. If I am uncertain of someone, I want to check out their stuff for free. If I really dig their stuff, I’m more inclined to buy. With this particular show, I knew of !!! and heard they were fantastic live (I almost dropped the f-bomb there… someone needs to let me know if profanity is acceptable). So I was excited to see what they had in store for me.
!!! was alright. I had fun – but not as much fun as I thought I would have. Nic Offer, their front man, was totally energetic and nuts. I just think for me, I’d rather see them at a festival, which makes sense because anytime someone recommended me seeing them live, it’s because they saw !!! at a summer music fest. There’s just more room to get drunk and crazy in the dance pit.
Anyway, here is their song Wannagain Wannagain. Their sound is described as dance punk, and you can tell why. I like that they’ve got that element of soul. Makes for a more interesting band.
As I’m unwinding from today’s activities, I wander on to youtube and decide to look at some Kingdom Hearts videos. Then it hits me. It’s been ten years since the first Kingdom Hearts game. TEN years. Holy shit, where did the time go?
I can still remember reading about the game’s concept. Final Fantasy + Disney = KINGDOM HEARTS. I honestly thought that wasn’t gonna work. Boy, was I wrong. The game was beyond successful in combining the two franchises into a wonderful, magical story. To say that I was inspired by the franchise would be an understatement. The game showcases some pretty thought-provoking psychological and emotional themes (the squaresoft side of the equation), along with the fun and cheerful environments that Disney is known for.
I won’t give away any of the plot, as I’m typically known for doing in real life. Wait, I was supposed to do my intro…I’m going to bed.
Hi I am Ferrisb1 or Jared and no idea what you guys want to call me. I have no idea what I am gonna contribute to this blog. Actually I think I am just gonna add random stories or random girl stories, random relationship stuff who knows. Oh and I WILL rant about sports. FYI. But I will be entertaining!
Watch this video. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
I want to do two things after watching this. Play Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and use Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. The other thing? Blog about how the movie would be so much better with Phoenix Wright, Albert Wesker, and Ryu. Hadoukens, UROBOROS, and OBJECTIONS.
I really need to write my intro. I’ll do that after I take a shower.
So dear Francis wanted me to write up a post about myself. I’ll let this video speak for itself:
If there is anything that you should really know about me, is that I don’t take myself too seriously. If you didn’t take that away from the video I just posted, then perhaps you should watch the second video I uploaded to my YouTube Channel.
Anyway, I suppose I am what Francis would call a “socialite.” Honestly, I believe real socialites have trust funds – but in contrast to the “geek world,” I guess that is what I am (albeit poor). I like to spend most of my time out in the real world, dancing at indie/disco/edm nights or meeting up w/friends to do whatever the hell it is my friends and I like to do. Most of geeky traits from my past have vanished, and I am left with only tendencies and obsessions that I hide in my closet behind the socially acceptable obsessions: fashion and music.
So this is where the light bulb clicks in and you realize that I was brought onto this project to help w/character design. The villainesses needed a fashionable look, and with my background in fashion and style (yes they are two different things) it was only natural for Francis to ask me for assistance. I think it also helps that I kind of relate to these “bad girls.” It’s not that I want to eliminate the world of nerd culture, I’ve just had my share of experiences.
PS If you must know what I geek out on, it’s Disney, Matt Groening, social media, and gadgets.
