Persona 5 – How I learned to stop worrying and steal hearts

I’ve just gone through my 4th playthrough of Persona 5.  I’ve logged over 300 hours and my Persona completion rate sits at a solid 94%.  Did that game shatter expectations?  Yes.

I’m sure you’ve already read plenty of reviews on this game, seen metacritic scores, etc….so any of my regular readers should already know how good the damn game is.

I think I’ve finally pinpointed what’s kept me playing this game, even after the first playthrough.  The ending.

OBVIOUS SPOILER WARNING ALERT

Having saved Tokyo from a fate worse than death, Akira (the protag’s manga name and his name in my game) is faced with his imminent sentencing for his part in the events that transpired in the year.  He doesn’t shy away from it, rather, he chooses the reason why he goes to the pokey.  His teammates, or the fate of the world.  Pretty badass.  He then spends time with his loved ones, for the first 3 straight playthroughs, it was Makoto for me, and for my latest playthrough, it was Ann.  Even their christmas date is sullied somewhat by the thought of his impending sentencing.  Those girls are perceptive as all hell.

On Christmas, instead of celebrating, the team gathers at Leblanc, realizing what Akira’s done.  They then steel their resolve to get him out of jail.  The Phantom Thieves along with Akira’s maxed confidants all rally to help get Akira out of prison.  They eventually succeed and Akira is released on the 13th of February.  Morgana pops up later, not dead.

He then has a romantic evening with Makoto.  Or Ann.  I’m going for Haru next.

After saying his final good-byes, the gang all pile into a Citroen van (much like Mona’s car form) and kick off an awesome road trip.  Ryuji says something nice, which is something we should all remember.

If you wanna change the world, all you have to do is just look at it differently… am I right?

Wise words, Ryuji.

My take on the ending is this.  It took the self-sacrifice themes of Persona 3’s Minato, and the group dynamics and bonds of Persona 4’s Yu, and rolled it up into an ending that really truly made me happy.  You come through the game feeling refreshed and good about yourself, much like Akira when he sticks his head through the sunroof of the van in the closing moments of the game.

And like the Phantom Thieves in that van, your adventures aren’t ending yet.   There’s always something to look forward to, just as long as you have hope.

That’s the message that SSB’s been carrying too.  Shit’s not so bad, right?

Oh….and I miss Tokyo.  So much.

The Strawberry Scented Fantasy Football League

Oh boy, oh boy…Ladies and gentlemen the talking of proverbial “smack” has begun!

From all corners of the world and from all realms of existence people are coming out of the woodwork to tell me about how they would destroy me in some Fantasy Football.

From emails, texts, DM’s, Snaps, even by assault with deadly Facebook-account I am being attacked in preparation for this seasons antics. Well all I can say my good friends is that I hope you are prepared in the most proper way possible. I am coming out in the most tip top Shane Falco form of competition and there is no Coach McGinty to hold me back from my quest to reign supreme. I welcome all sorts of competition, Sports Guru’s, Auto Drafters, Former FF Champions, Waiver Wire Surfers, I don’t care!

I’ll be starting my very own Strawberry Scented Fantasy Football League In the next day or so with plans of bringing the respective internet friends and family along with a live draft. Friendships will be broken, tortilla chips will be consumed, wide screen high definition broadcasts will be watched, and an epic live draft will take place.

Old Man Diary

-DISCLAIMER: NO PICTURE BLOG. YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO READ THIS ONE-

Someday in the not so far away future my daughter is going to laugh and shake her head at the concept of a “blog” or a “taxi,” or “Twittering.” Think about how drastically our world has changed just from three decades ago when the internet was a novelty. Than consider how far we could be only five decades from now into the future, a time in which you and I will still be alive but the picture and reality of our world could be completely shifted.

Every morning I wake up and consume a massive bowl of granola cereal and then wake my daughter up so she could get ready for school. Every time I see my daughter, I realize how fast she’s growing and how old i’m getting. I seriously cringe at the sound of my age and find myself thinking of my life (so far) more and more often.

Like most people taking a stroll down memory lane there is always something you wish you could take back and re-do. I, being a perfectionist for most things, have a huge amount of things I wish I could have re-done, but the point is that you do what you have to do, and don’t look back with regret. I’ve changed a great deal since my “Hypebeast” days and way more since my dragonball hair days. Things ALWAYS change and as long as you carry that same youthful energy that you’ve had since you were a kid, and make it shine through everything you do, you can’t go wrong. which is why I can’t be anything but happy with the outcome of my life.

Just know without a doubt that every season incites more growth. who really knew what they wanted growing up anyway? When I was younger I wanted to be a Weather Man by day and a Cop by night. Fast forward 20 something years and I’m a elemantary school teacher…and then a leasing agent..and then a teacher again.

Life is a trip.

From the CEO’s desk: Stand Tall.

One of my cuzzos posted this on his facebook today. It’s the scans from Amazing Spiderman #36. If you haven’t read it already, I highly suggest you do. To sum it all up, Spidey and co. deal with the 9/11 attacks, and all the aftermath.

This comic is probably one of the most powerful chapters in the entire Marvel universe. One page stands out in particular, and I’m going to post it here.

stand-tall

I’m not going to go too in depth as to what I was feeling when it all happened, but I will say this.  America has come a long way from then.  We’ve still got a ways to go, but I know that we can do it.  We’ve gotta stand tall.

That’s my, no, our promise to you, our readers.  We’ll continue to stand tall.

Macross Delta First Impressions

“Macross Cure: School Valkyrie Project is my favorite animu fam.”
J. Gasaway

I had a chance to watch a preview episode for the upcoming Macross series, Macross Delta.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.  For me, a Macross series needs the following:

Does it have it?  In a word, yes.  Though some people may crave a more action-based premise, I’m totally digging this concept.  For people that are more of the original SDF Macross, Zero, and Frontier flavor, this series probably won’t tickle your fancy.  People like me that enjoyed the fuck out of Macross 7 (FIRE!!) will be sure to get a kick out this one.

And I don’t know about you, but I’m trying to figure out who Mirage is descended from.  If it’s Mylene,  then I’ll shit my pants from joy.  BOMBA!!!

Speak up.

I’ll never understand this…If you have a problem with someone, why not go handle it like a man? I’m not saying go out and fight that person but, go address the issue you have, and handle it. Talk about things before it turns into something worse. Instead most people would rather keep it to themselves, having those thoughts brew and fester inside, making themselves more and more angry. Others will take the slander approach and add lies and bs to the mix and talk about the issue with everyone and their moms. Everyone BUT, the person they have a problem with of course. I couldn’t tell you which one is worse because they both suck!

Let me put this in a way some of you might better understand…

Most people who have this issue probably think they’re so awesome…kind of like a Charizard. In realty, they’re more like a Garbador…you’re literally trash.
For all you kids/teens/ and heaven forbid, grown ass men who are having this problem. SPEAK UP! GROW SOME NUTTS! AND HANDLE IT!
life would be so much better for you in the end.

Fighting through doubt

It’s been a rough few weeks, and I’ve been dealing with a few issues of my own.  A whole buncha stuff cropped up and it left me feeling like a shell of myself.  Not knowing if what I was doing was right, constantly questioning myself, etc….

I’m still trying to work through it all.  Hopefully I can work through this funk.  Fortunately, I’ve got my crew still behind me, after all this time.  I guess I’m doin’ something right.

Sorry for the lack of content.  I promise I’ll make it up to you guys.  Somehow, someway.

This week, it’s back to the fightin’ office for me.  Hard training awaits.   Some of my homies have been holding it down on the geek front.

My homegirl Jennice has been streaming Xenogears every Monday-Wednesday starting at 8 PM PST.  Here’s her site:

Kupo_Yo Gaming

And we’re playing Destiny again, since House of Wolves came out.  Shit’s pretty hype.

So….how does this work again?

Romeo, that water was cold.

How’s everyone doing?  Between comic con, working with new writers, a promotion at my work, a knee injury, and my new addiction to Manna BBQ, we’ve been busy.  Let me apologize for the lack of updates on SSB, believe me, we’ve all wanted to sit down and write, but we’ve been planning some new things, on top of all the stuff I mentioned earlier.

A new artist

We’ve been working with Jimmy Pham, an artist that doesn’t have his head jammed up his own ass.   He’s got a style that’s quite malleable, and doesn’t make people change their script to fit his art, especially after it’s been drawn.  He’s not socially awkward, not a tool, and he’s pretty swoll.  Seriously.  Swolltaku no michi, for sure.

Videos

Brian, Justin, and myself have been kicking around the idea of videos.  Why the hell not?  I’m always down for something new.  One of our new videos is at the top of the page.

Collaborations

We’ll probably be working with a lot more people to bring more lulz and creativity to your computer screen.  Because reasons.

More of the same, pokey geekery that you know and love

While we are gonna be dropping some new shit, we’re not forgetting what makes SSB…SSB.  A love for all things truly geek.  Anime reviews, Game reviews, MMA stuff, me explaining my love for Ar Tonelico to the Dirty Gentlemen, Justin combing his sweet-ass pompadour, Ericka repurposing the internet for her own purposes, Brian getting us into shenanigans, Jared putting people back together, Abe talkin’ about soccer, Jonathan talkin’ about wrassling….IT’S GONNA BE FUCKIN’ TIGHT.

So buckle up, because we’re gonna bring the noise.  And here’s a preview of what you can expect over the coming weeks.

aka DAN Adoption Documentary pt. 8

We return to bring you the final chapter of this amazing documentary. Dan Matthews performs for the first time in Korea with his brother and sister in attendance and says goodbye to his family at Incheon Airport. Watch here:

The vignette highlighting the impact of being a Korean adoptee speaks volumes about how this unique experience will affect future generations. Likely, they will experience present, local culture but some cultural values may be lost. It’s similar to my own experience as the child of immigrants. We’ll just have to wait and see what the impact will be.

Saying goodbye is never easy. I couldn’t help getting emotional seeing him with his biological mother. Her emotions literally jump from the screen every time I watch it. Be glad to know since then, Dan returns to spend time with his family in Korea. My hope for him is that this experience continues to shape him and his world view.

I hope you enjoyed us bringing you this series. I feel that we all relate to Dan’s journey. Knowing and accepting who you are is the first step to accomplishing big things. How did you guys enjoy it? Want to see more stuff like it? Tweet me at @999HP!
